Mount Aureol History

The Mount Aureol area of Freetown is home to Fourah Bay College, the oldest college in Western Africa. It was also the first western-style university in Western Africa. It was established in 1827 and soon became a magnet for the patriated former slaves and other Africans seeking higher education under the British Empire. Before its current location on Mount Aureol, overlooking Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay College was located on the East end of Freetown.
